Diablo 4: How to Get Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma

Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma is a quest item in Diablo 4. Bugged in a similar way as the Holy Chalice, it can randomly appear on the ground at the gates of Kyovashad. Needed for a quest in Act 1, getting the item involves reaching the Horadric Vault with Neyrelle. Here’s how to get Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma in Diablo 4.

Fledgling Scholar Quest — How to Get Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma

Though I go into greater detail in the walkthrough below, here are the main points of this quest and how to get Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma in Diablo 4:

  • Start the Fledgling Scholar Quest.
  • Go with Neyrelle to the Horadric Vault.
  • Explore the Vault.
  • Defeat Tchort, Hearld of Lilith.

Fledgling Scholar, Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma Walkthrough

The Fledgling Scholar quest requires you to find Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma. Neyrelle is seeking a book to get you across the Black Lake and to Lilith. Once you enter the Horadric Vault, you’ll be prompted to explore the area and unlock the main door within. Another book in the room to the right will allow Neyrelle to break the charm and open the door.

Once inside, head up the passageway on the left. At the fork with two locked doors, chat with Neyrelle to have her unlock the left door. Proceed from here without her while she explores the rooms you’ve already been through.

You’ll need to fight through a variety of demons and skeletons as you explore the hallways of the vault, so be prepared with potions. You’re looking for a healing fountain toward the northern part of the map, with a singular path leading away from it to the boss of the area.

How to Beat Tchort, Herald of Lilith Boss

When you enter the next room, you’ll see a book surrounded by a viscous whirlwind. Behind it looms Tchort, the Herald of Lilith. How this demon got into the vault is a mystery, but she’s about die.

To defeat Tchort, avoid the lightning she sends out in columns. If they hit you, they’ll deal damage and push you toward the whirlwind. The little statues around the edge of the field will occasionally open up, shooting fire out and creating fire orbs toward the center of the area. In addition to dealing with those AoE attacks, you’ll also want to avoid the whirlwind around the book, as it will deal damage over time (DoT) while you stand in it.

Tchort can teleport short distances around the field, which can make tracking her a bit difficult because of all the AoE effects. Aside from her lightning strikes, most damage will come from the battlefield itself.

  • As a melee character, deal as much damage as you can before you have to back off again.
  • Ranged characters have a bit more of an advantage in this fight, but you’ll need to be aware of the effects going on around you as you strike her.

Once defeated, the whirlwind around the book will disappear. Go up to it and collect it to obtain Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma. Return the spellbook to Neyrelle to complete this part of the quest.

Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma Bug

Similar to the Holy Chalice, Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma can bug out. If you see the item at the gates of Kyovashad or near the portal, don’t pick it up. If you pick it up, Theories of Rathma will stay in your inventory, even if you already completed the associated quest or haven’t even started Fledging Scholar yet. When dropped, it may respawn in Kyovashad or return to your inventory the next time you log in.

That’s all you need to know about how to get Death Harnessed: Theories of Rathma in Diablo 4. For more quest walkthroughs or how to avoid many of the game’s bugs, check out our D4 guides library.
